1.    This is supposedly one of the top online avocado sites. They don’t seem to have any social media presence. The website feels dated and is difficult to navigate.

1.    Their website is laid out nicely. They do have social media links and seems like they post somewhat regularly. The news section on the website has not been updated for a long time.

1.    This is the best website I looked at. They have their Instagram feed embedded in their site which I think is good. They seem to post regularly except their YouTube videos are 2 years old. They are well done, but I would like to see updates.

1.    The website is laid out nicely and they are different in that they use Yelp. They were the only ones doing this. I didn’t think about Yelp as a social media platform, but I guess they are. They do have post integrated in the website, but they don’t seem to update very regularly.

1.    The website has really nice pictures and is aesthetically pleasing. Their use of social media is limited to Facebook and Instagram. Their post are random, but some are good. They don’t post regularly. They are the only ones that I saw use a discount code in one of their post.

I was surprised to find out the lack of social media usage in all the sites I looked at. Yes they have a social media account and are using it, but I don't feel they tied it in to the businesses "story". It seemed more personal story telling instead or random posts.

I did like seeing Yelp used by Morro Creek Ranch. I had not originally thought of Yelp when thinking of social media usage. It is a unique perspective and makes complete sense given the types of businesses I was looking at.

Also surprising was that everyone used Facebook. I guess I need to rethink Facebook as I thought it was irrelevant when I started this class. My generation really doesn't use it, but that doesn't mean I should not learn to understand it better. I do use Instagram and see the tie in with Facebook to expand on a post so I should look at it more from that point of view. Every one of the sites (except the no social media site) was on Facebook.

I think a more structured approach should be used in social media. Get the audience engaged, get them commenting, offer specials and most of all find ways to get them emotionally involved in your brand.

Week 16 Planning Your Future Strategy

Learning the various social media platforms has been a real eye opener. I thought Facebook, Instagram, You Tube and Twitter were all good for our business and creating newsletters are an invaluable tool to create and increase sales, but learning to blog was also a very useful tool I am planning to expand on. In researching all of our competitors, I got to see what they are or aren't doing. There were a few companies that are very active in posting regularly and I learned from them and will grow from that. I liked some of their visuals on their websites and I will incorporate similar offerings. Offering seasonal ads as well as sales is a good idea especially in the gift giving season going on now. Farming is such a day to day business and things change rapidly so I'm going to start blogging more in addition to Facebook and Instagram about what we do to try and convey honesty, hard work, quality and value in what we produce.  I will plan on  spending  3-4 hours a day for 2 da

Week 11 Email Marketing

If I were to write a newsletter, I would write one just before harvest season which usually starts in January, but this year will probably start earlier than that and again throughout the season bi-weekly, until the end of the harvest which is in July for us in San Diego. I would offer a discount coupon code for 5 or 10% off to inspire readers to buy now. The content would consist of the following ideas: Our fruit is hand grown by a small family on 12 acres in the avocado Capital of the world. We take pride in how we grow our fruit, raise our bees to aid in pollinating the trees, how we water and fertilize the trees, how they are in season NOW, how the oil content is just right, how ours are pesticide & herbicide free, high in zinc and other essential nutrients and amino acids that our bodies don't produce on their own, how they last longer than mass marketed avocados because we don't gas them with synthetic ethylene like the packing houses do to speed up ripening, how th

Blog Post Week 3 Part 1

I have experienced many difficulties communicating with businesses. Using social media can sometimes make it easier to get noticed and get the problem solved. It just depends if companies  have good social media presence or don't.  For example, United Airlines is inconsistent with how they choose to respond. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, where other companies will respond every time. Complaining via social media usually means you have to have social media knowledge to begin with to know how to tag your posts correctly so they can become visible to the public with hashtags. I had a bad experience when Cold Stone Creamery closed early one night as I was walking in and they told me I had to leave because they were closed and their posted hours of operation showed them as still being open. I got mad and wrote the company to complain using Twitter. They responded and a few days after that, I received a letter in the mail offering me a free ice cream of my choice and an
